FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State swept a doubleheader against Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon at Mary Lou Retton Park. The Falcons won game one by a score of 7-2 and walked-off a 7-6 winner in game two.
In game one, back-to-back doubles from Randy Tallhamer and Nick Hallis put Fairmont State on top 1-0 in the second. Hallis later scored on a RBI groundout by Tyler Barnette. Matt Edwards drilled a pitch over the left field fence to make the score 2-1. Three Wesleyan errors in the fifth led to a trio of runs for Fairmont State, making the score 5-1. FSU's Trevor Funk drove home two more in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-1. Aaron Wiegel belted a home run over left center field wall in the seventh, but that was all the Bobcats could muster, falling 7-2.
Aaron Adams (4-3) gave up seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits, while striking out a pair and walking one.
In game two, Corey Davis opened the scoring with a RBI single in top of the second. Fairmont State's Josh Wine, Brian Coleman and Funk all drove home runs in the bottom of the inning to put the Falcons in front 3-1. Barnette extended the lead to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly in the third. Davis cut the deficit to 4-3 with a two-RBI single and Dylan Rhodes tied the game with a single later in the inning. J.R. Tenney worked a bases-loaded walk to put Wesleyan on top 5-4. Edwards plated the Bobcats fifth run of the inning with a RBI single to extend the lead to 6-4. Fairmont State promptly responded with a RBI double from Jeff Fansler and a sacrifice fly by Tallhamer to knot the game at 6-6 after four innings. Tallhamer delivered the game's deciding blow in the ninth with a blast over the centerfield fence to secure the 7-6 win.
Zach Oliver earned a no decision after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts. Chris Stein (0-1) took the loss, surrendering one run on one hit with a pair of strikeouts and one walk.
Wesleyan will look to get back on track Saturday as it hosts Ohio Valley.
