Shepherdstown,W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team opened up with a win to start Mountain East Conference play after turning back host Shepherd University 8-1 Sunday morning.
The Lady Bobcats swept the doubles for the second time in two days on the way to capturing a key conference road victory. Wesleyan then took five of the six singles, dropping only one set, in a dual win that was closer than the score indicates.
"We got off to a great start," said head coach marc walters, team raised its record to 2-0. "We have been working on our doubles nonstop since the season started, and I believe it paid off today. As the scores showed in singles, teams are very evenly matched, so getting off to a quick start really helped are young kids relax and compete well in their singles."
Paula Pimenta took a 6-1, 4-6, 10-2 victory over Kaitlin Mumaw in the #1 position, and teamed with fellow freshman Julia Uchoa to take an important 8-4 win at #1 doubles over Mumaw and Jana Jones. Angie Pittenger, Sarah Cameron, Allene Connor, and Somi Jeong all contributed a singles and doubles win on the day.
Wesleyan returns to the court Wednesday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 4 p.m. Conference tilt.
