Men and Women's Tennis Fly Past Falcons

Both the West Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's Tennis teams claimed 9-0 victories at Fairmont State this week.  The men opened the 2014 MEC season on Tuesday while the women battled Wednesday.

On the men's side, defending Mid-Atlantic regional champions swept the doubles by scores of 8-2, 8-2 , and 8-3 and then all six singles in route to the victory.

Joel Izquierdo and Aitor Reparaz improved their record at number 1 doubles to 4-0 going into next week's ITA regional championships at Mercyhurst University. The duo should be favored among the top seeds at that tournament following their impressive wins at the West Liberty invite.

The ITA will be held on September 27th-29th in Erie, PA.

As for the women, the Lady Bobcats took all 9 matches without dropping a set, despite close results at 4,5, and 6 singles. The Falcons had defeated Wesleyan in the previous 3 meetings, including twice last season.

"The girls are doing a nice job competing, and when they are not necessarily playing well, we find a way to stay in the match," said Coach Marc Walters. "The freshman are really trying to take it all in on the fly, so it's nice to see they have been successful in tight sets."

The 'Cats #1 singles player Paula Pimenta led the charge against the Falcons, teaming wuth Julia Uchoa to win 8-2 at #1 doubles and then defeating FSU's Taylor Nichols by a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Wesleyan (3-0, 2-0 MEC) returns to the court on Saturday for the ITA  regional championships in Charleston. The Lady Bobcats will take their top 4 singles players and two doubles teams to the event, which is the individual qualifier for the national ITA championships.

Times and draws will be announced Friday afternoon, and play will be held at the Allegheny Power Park courts.
