BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team suffered a disheartening setback in their quest for a NCAA play-off bid at the hands of Urbana today at the Wood Street Field.
Urbana entered the game with just a 3-9 record, but handed Wesleyan a major 2-0 setback.
Wesleyan entered the game fourth in the Atlantic Region and 29th nationally.
"It's disappointing, but we just have to move and get ready to play our next game," Wesleyan head coach Gavin Donaldson remarked.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half. Wesleyan controlled a lot of the play in the first half including owning an 8-2 advantage in shots.
The game changed when Urbana's Ben Fitzpatrick scored from left of the net at short range. Ebenezer Agyeman was credited with the assist.
Following that, Urbana slowed down the game and packed it in defensively, giving Wesleyan fits on offense.
With 80 seconds left in the game, Mike Bamber iced the game for Urbana with an unassisted goal.
Wesleyan owned an overall advantage in shots, 13-5, and an 8-5 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Corner kicks were even at 5-5.
Wesleyan keeper Felipe Vial turned away three shots.
Wesleyan dropped to 6-4-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the MEC.
They will return to action this Tuesday against Shepherd. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
