Lady Bobcats Down Urbana To Advance to MEC Semis

WHEELING -- West Virginia Wesleyan earned narrow victories in its first two sets on its way to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18) victory over Urbana on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament. 

The Lady Bobcats (11-12) advance to the semifinals tomorrow night against No. 1 seed and host Wheeling Jesuit at 7:30 p.m. Urbana's season ends with a record of 13-17.

Erin Bond led WVWC with 16 kills and six blocks. Hannah King and Lindsay Caldwell each had 11 kills, and Stacie Baumann added 10. Paulina Nottingham had 44 assists and five service aces on the night.

Urbana was paced by MEC Freshman of the Year Katlynn Dunlap's 15 kills. Katlin Kremer had 14 kills and hit .522 in the match, and Mary Hendricks had 43 assists. Kelsey Volkmer contributed 10 kills and a team-best 14 digs. 

The first set saw eight ties and was knotted at 23-23, but the Lady Bobcats finished the set with a kill from Bond and an ace from Nottingham.

The second set was nearly as close with six ties and three lead changes, and once again WVWC was able pull it out down the stretch, breaking a 17-17 tie with five-straight points.

Urbana never trailed in set three hammering down 16 kills with just two errors and hitting .519.

West Virginia Wesleyan turned the tables in the final set on its way to the victory.
