Box Score OXFORD, Pa. – For one half, head basketball coach Michael Bari had to be pleased with everything in the debut of his West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats Saturday afternoon against Lincoln University.
The first-year head coach of the Lady 'Cats had his team up by a 30-23 score and the Wesleyan defense held Lincoln to a horrid 7-for-37 shooting effort at the half.
But it was a total flip of the switch for Wesleyan in the second half as they were outscored by a 61-32 score en route to an 84-62 loss.
Wesleyan jumped into a 6-0 lead and kept Lincoln off the scoreboard for the first 5:28 of the game. It wasn't until Zephrah Pam made a jump shot at the 14:32 mark that Lincoln got on the board.
Lincoln had closed the gap to 12-11 but Allie Browne drained a three, Allyson Freiermuth made a lay-up and Adrian Cunningham (pictured) tossed in a free throw to push the Wesleyan lead back to seven at 18-11 with 5:39 remaining in the first half.
The two teams would trade baskets as Wesleyan would remain ahead by seven at the break, at 30-23.
Wesleyan started the second half extending their lead to 12 at 36-24 with just 55 seconds gone, but Lincoln went on a 7-0 run to close the difference to 36-31.
A Cunningham jumper and lay-up pushed the Wesleyan lead back to eight at 40-31 at the 16:14 mark of the second half, but it was all Lincoln after that.
Lincoln went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 50-42 lead.
Browne nailed two free throws to bring Wesleyan to within six, at 50-44, but the Lady 'Cats couldn't get any closer.
Lincoln closed the game outscoring Wesleyan by a 34-18 spread.
After shooting 19 percent in the first half, Lincoln shot a whopping 66 percent in the second half as they hit on 23 of their 35 field goals.
Wesleyan only managed to get scoring efforts from six of the 13 players that received minutes on the floor.
Cunningham led all scorers with 24 points.
Mari Stewart had a double-double for the Lady 'Cats scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Freiermuth also reached double digits scoring 12 points.
Both teams hauled down 50 rebounds.
Wesleyan will now return to action this Wednesday for their home opener as they face Johnson C. Smith at 6 p.m.
