Lady 'Cat Basketball Falls in Home Opener

Box Score

Buckhannon – The West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team held a four-point lead at halftime, but was ultimately overpowered in the second half and dropped their second game of the season 87-69 to Johnson C. Smith University.

It was the home debut for head coach Michael Bari and his Lady Bobcats.

The Lady 'Cats came out of the gates strong and pulled ahead 10-2 after a field goal by Allyson Freiermuth with 16:55 remaining in the first half.

The Lady 'Cats continued to control the pace of the game the rest of the half and took a 39-35 lead going into halftime.

Wesleyan was outscored 52-30 in the second half, which proved to be the difference.

Five minutes into the second half, Johnson C. Smith went ahead 51-46 and never looked back.

There were some bright spots for the Lady 'Cats, however, in the loss.

Adrian Cunningham shot 8-11 in the contest and recorded 24 points, including going eight for eight at the charity stripe.

KiKi DeVane had 14 points in the game and lead the team with seven rebounds.

Allie Browne also contributed for the Lady 'Cats with 14 points.

Wesleyan drops to 0-2 on the season and will return to court Saturday as they take on fellow MEC opponent Fairmont State.

The game will be played at home and is slated to start at 2 p.m.
