HUNTINGTON – Perhaps nobody had a tougher road to navigate in their conference tournament than the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats.
As the fourth-seed in the Mountain East Conference, the Bobcats were faced with the daunting challenge of taking on not only the top seed in the MEC, but the number one team in the nation – the University of Charleston Golden Eagles.
Wesleyan gave Charleston the only blemish on their record, a 1-1 tie back on Oct. 5 at the Wood Street Field.
The Bobcats wouldn't be as fortunate tonight at Marshall's Hoops Family Field at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex as they dropped a 2-0 decision.
Charleston struck early in the 10th minute when Conor Branson scored on a header.
The Golden Eagles put the game away in the 86th minute with their second goal when Will Roberts scored off a pass from Branson.
Charleston owned a 12-2 margin in shots-on-goal and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Wesleyan keeper Felipe Vial turned away 10 shots.
The loss ends Wesleyan's season and leaves them with an overall record of 8-7-3.
Charleston improved to 17-0-1. They will square off against Wheeling Jesuit, who pulled of a minor upset over Notre Dame by a 2-0 score, in the other semi-final.
Wheeling Jesuit will visit Charleston this Sunday in a time to be announced for the MEC championship.
