URBANA, OHIO – Things didn't going according to plan for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat football team this afternoon against the Urbana Blue Knights Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference tilt.
Wesleyan, coming off a big 34-13 win over Fairmont State last week, was hoping to pick up their fifth win of the season and finish at .500 against the two-win Blue Knights.
But it wasn't meant to be as Wesleyan had all sorts of issues in a 34-17 setback.
Wesleyan had their second-worst productive output of the season gaining only 202 yards of offense. Part of the offensive woes were contributed to converting on just three of their 14 third down opportunities.
Defensively, the 'Cats allowed 534 yards to the Blue Knights which was their second-worst performance of the year.
Things started out well enough for the 'Cats as they held Urbana to two straight two-and-outs on defense.
Wesleyan managed to get on the board on their second drive as senior kicker Kasper Bernild blasted a 47-yard field goal.
Urbana thought rattled off the next three scores to take a 21-3 lead.
Wesleyan cut the lead to 21-10 when Jeremy Musselman fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to Zach Schademan on a three-play drive that covered 71 yards with 12:35 left in the second quarter.
Musselman connected on a 58-yard pass to Chase Blackwell prior to the score.
Urbana added one more touchdown with 3:42 left in the half to take a 28-10 lead into the locker room.
Wesleyan scored on their first possession of the second half.
It was a 12-play, 69-yard drive that chewed up 5:40 of the third-quarter clock.
Mike Anderson capped off the drive with a three-yard run to make it 28-17.
Two plays later, Wesleyan's Jabari Weems picked off a Colby Speice pass and returned it to the Urbana 21, but the play was negated by the Bobcats being offsides.
Urbana went on to score on the drive to make it a 35-17 score.
Neither team would score in the fourth quarter.
Musselman completed nine of his 20 passes for 118 yards and one score.
Tyler Bolen completed four of his 13 passes for 50 yards.
Anderson led all Bobcat receivers with five catches for 49 yards.
Anderson also led the Wesleyan rushing game with 56 yards on 17 carries.
Mike Savage (pictured) led the Wesleyan defense with nine tackles including a sack.
Urbana improved to 3-7 overall and 2-7 in the MEC. They will wrap up their regular season next week against Charleston.
Wesleyan wrapped up their regular season with a 4-6 overall record and a 4-6 in the MEC.
