Box Score ERIE (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat basketball team couldn't slow down a hot-shooting Mercyhurst Lakers squad here tonight in a non-conference tilt.
Mercyhurst shot 60 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the three-point arc in an 86-64 victory.
The 86 points was the second-most allowed by Wesleyan during the season. They allowed Johnson C. Smith 87 three weeks ago.
Individually, the Lady 'Cats received solid efforts from Adrian Cunningham and Allyson Freiermuth.
Cunningham led the team in scoring with 21 points while Freiermuth had a double-double, scoring 13 points and yanking down 11 rebounds.
Mari Stewart was the other Lady Bobcat to reach double digits with 10 points.
Wesleyan never led in the contest.
Down 12-7 early, a Cunningham lay-up brought Wesleyan to within three with six minutes gone.
Mercyhurst rattled off the next 11 points to take control of the game with a 23-9 lead.
Down 43-26, Wesleyan made a late run in the first half.
Susan Meyer made back-to-back lay-ups and then Courtney Small made a lay-up and fired in a three-pointer to bring Wesleyan to within eight, at 43-35, with two minutes left in the half.
Mercyhurst would score the final five points to take a 48-35 lead into the break.
Wesleyan would go scoreless the first four minutes of the second half before Cunningham made a jumper that closed the score to 55-37.
The closest Wesleyan could get to Mercyhurst was at 13 points when Cunningham darted inside for a lay-up that made it a 68-55 game with 7:04 remaining.
Wesleyan shot 36.5 percent from the floor hitting on 27 of their 74 shots.
Wesleyan outrebounded Mercyhurst by a 45-32 margin.
Mercyhurst improved to 2-7 on the season.
Wesleyan fell to 0-7 overall.
They will remain idle the rest of the year and will return to action Saturday, Jan. 3 at Charleston.
