Box Score WISE, Va. – Being able to finish a game has been a thorn in the side for West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball coach Michael Bari.
It happened again to the Lady Bobcats in their Mountain East Conference road clash with the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers tonight in a 70-60 setback.
Wesleyan looked like they were on their way to their first win of the season midway through the second half after they took a 51-46 lead following a Mari Stewart (pictured) jumper with 9:19 remaining.
But Wesleyan allowed Virginia-Wise to go on a 9-0 run and take a 55-51 lead with seven minutes remaining. Wesleyan was never able to recapture the lead as Virginia-Wise outscored them 15-9 in the final seven minutes of action.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the MEC.
The game started off well enough for Wesleyan as Allie Browne unleashed a three-pointer and Adrian Cunningham dropped in a free thrown and then a jumper to give Wesleyan a quick 6-0 lead.
Virginia-Wise would take a 13-11 lead but a Stacy Remer jumper deadlocked the game at 13-13 with 10 minutes remaining.
Down 17-13, Wesleyan rattled off the next six points to take a 19-17 advantage with Allyson Freiermuth, Cunningham and Browne all popping in jumpers with 6:48 left in the first half.
Virginia-Wise controlled the final 6:48 as they outscored Wesleyan by a 15-4 margin to take a 32-23 lead in the intermission.
Stewart knocked down two jumpers early in the second half to bring Wesleyan to within five at 32-27.
The Cavaliers pushed their lead out to 10 at 42-32 with 14:19 remaining.
Wesleyan though took complete control of the game going on a 17-2 run to take a 49-44 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.
The two teams would trade baskets before Virginia-Wise went on their 9-0 run to put the game away.
Stewart had a huge game for the Lady Bobcats posting a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Cunningham added 13 points and seven rebounds while Brown contributed 11 points and seven assists.
KiKi DeVane added seven points and 11 rebounds.
Wesleyan will return to action this Sunday when they host Concord at 2 p.m.
