Weather Pounding Spring Sports

Buckhannon, W.Va. -- It's the same old song and dance, my friends.  Mother Nature is once again playing the key villain in spring competitions.  Several Wesleyan sports including softball, lacrosse, baseball, men's and women's golf, and track and field have all been victim to postponements on the last weekend in March, something that hasn't happened in decades.

With consistent, pounding rain and high winds on Saturday the Bobcat Track & Field team managed to host their first meet of the season, but weather was a consistent factor that plagued all of the competing athletes and coaches.

Women's Lacrosse's THINK PINK game verse Shepherd Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm has been rescheduled due to snow and unplayable conditions.  The game has been moved to Monday at 3:00pm, if weather is suitable.

The Bobcat golf teams were traveling as well this weekend.  The Women's team is near Cleveland, Ohio at the NC4K Classic awaiting for snow and gusting winds to pass.  Play was scheduled to begin today in the two day, 36-hole event but teams will now start early Monday morning in hopes of completing the 36 holes in one day.  The Men's team is at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling competing on the Arnold Palmer course and find themselves in the same boat.  Original tee times today will be pushed back in hopes of completing the event on Monday, however, only 18 holes will be played.

Last but not least of the varsity sports in-season affected by the harsh winter are the baseball and softball teams.  After finally being able to host a pair of double-headers, baseball verse Shepherd and softball verse Glenville State the teams were scheduled to hit the road this weekend.  Both softball games scheduled against Shepherd and Fairmont State for the weekend have been cancelled without a make-up date as of now.  Baseball was scheduled to do battle with conference foe UVa-Wise in Wise, Va., but rain on Saturday and snow on Sunday has pushed those contests back as well.

With the exception of a few days, much of March has been tagged with snow and postponements.  The phrase "In like a lion, out like a lamb" unfortunately did not hold up for the month of March, but with a warmer, optimistically brighter forecast ahead for next week, perhaps the month of April will bring out the spring sports in full force.  Until then, stay warm.
