Buckhannon, W.Va. -- The red hot, 17th nationally ranked Bobcat Softball team took three out of four games over the weekend at Culpepper Field gaining 30 wins for the 2014 campaign. On Saturday afternoon Wesleyan would split with 2nd place MEC, UVa-Wise, then complete a two-game thrilling sweep of the Concord Mt. Lions.
Senior Jacqui Omichinski would pick up first game victories on, both, Saturday and Sunday in two close, one run games. The vet held the explosive Cavaliers scoreless in a 1-0 win then clamped down the Mt. Lions to only 1 run in the Bobcats 2-1 win.
Saturday's second game, however, was a different story as the UVa-Wise Cavs pounded out 10 runs in a wake-up call for the 'Cats as they were delivered a 10-1 blow sending Wesleyan home with a bittersweet taste in their mouths awaiting the arrival of Concord Sunday.
Omichinski would set the pace on the mound and at the plate against the Mt. Lions in game one adding the game winning RBI in the bottom of the 5th. Her partner in crime, catcher Megan Malenstyn, would add the other RBI of the game in the bottom of the 1st doubling in leadoff hitter Alex Furr.
The Mt. Lions would control the first three innings tallying one run in each bringing the score to 3-0 until the bottom of the 4th when Wesleyan's bats would ignite for three runs. Leadoff Jessica Griffin would reach on a walk that would lead to a pitching change for the Mt. Lions. It was Malenstyn, again, wasting no time as she proceeded to hit a first pitch, two-run homer that brought life back to the 'Cats. Shortstop Rebekah Honce was then hit by a pitch before she would score as well on a Carleigh Hall sacrifice to left field tying the game at 3-3. The teams would stay locked until the bottom of the 7th when the three consecutive singles set up the stage for Honce's sacrifice fly to right field that plated pinch runner Morgan Allen from 3rd.
The weekend brings the 'Cats to an impressive, overall 30-8 record and 15-3 in the Mountain East, good enough for first place. Wesleyan will return home Wednesday to host Salem in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm.
