WISE, Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan offense racked up 469 yards of offense in a 23-7 victory over the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest.
Despite the output, the Bobcat offense had two settle for two first-quarter Kasper Bernild field goals as their only scoring in the first half.
Bernild booted field goals of 42 and 34 yards.
Sandwiched between the two Bernild field goals was a two-yard touchdown run by UVa.-Wise's Andre Dickerson. Dickerson's run capped off a nine-play, 71-yard drive.
The Cavaliers took that 7-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Bobcat defense forced a UVa.-Wise punt on their first possession of the second half.
Starting at their own 15-yard-line, the 'Cats marched 85 yards in nine plays to take a 13-7 lead.
The drive started with quarterback Jeremy Musselman completing four straight passes. Following an incompletion, Musselman scrambled for 23 yards taking the ball down to the Cavalier 41.
Michael Anderson was hit behind the line for a one-yard-loss, but Musselman fired a 37-yard strike to Zach Schademan that put the ball at the UVa.-Wise 5-yard-line and Musselman wrapped up the drive with a five-yard toss to Chase Blackwell.
Bernild kicked another field goal with 12:33 remaining in the fourth quarter to up the Wesleyan lead to 16-7.
Wesleyan put the game away with a four-play, 56-yard drive late in the fourth quarter.
Starting at their own 44, Anderson carried the ball twice for 17 yards, Musselman hit Blackwell for three yards and capped off the drive with a 36-yard pass to Stephen Rogalski with 3:29 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.
Rogalski ended his day with 142 receiving on only four catches.
Musselman ended his day going over the 300-yard mark. He completed 20 of his 36 attempts for 317 yards and two touchdown passes.
Anderson led all rushers with 97 yards on 13 attempts.
Denzel Butler came up huge for the Bobcat defense with two interceptions and one tackle-for-loss. He also added eight tackles.
The Bobcats of head coach George Shehl improved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.
They will return to action next Saturday when they host Notre Dame. Kick-off is slated for noon.
