Box Score BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats had their highest offensive output of the season and their best shooting night of the year, but they still came up short despite a solid effort against the Glenville State Lady Pioneers here Thursday night.
The Lady 'Cats dropped an 83-77 decision.
The 77 points is a season-high breaking their mark of 70 points against Concord on Dec. 7.
Wesleyan also shot a season-best 43.3 percent from the floor.
The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 1-13 overall and 1-10 in the MEC.
Glenville State improved to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in the MEC.
Despite the solid shooting numbers, Wesleyan just couldn't keep pace with the Lady Pioneers who fired up 52 three pointers.
An attacking press defense by Glenville State also forced Wesleyan into 21 turnovers.
Wesleyan fell behind early by a 9-0 score before KiKi DeVane mad a jumper and Allyson Freiermuth knocked down an eight-footer to make it a 9-4 score.
Wesleyan remained down by five, at 20-15, but Adrian Cunningham popped in a short jumper and Mari Stewart (pictured) uncorked a three-pointer to deadlock the game at 20-20 with 10:37 left in the first half.
Glenville State pushed their lead back to four at 34-30 with 4:15 remaining in the half but Wesleyan would go on a 9-0 run to take a 39-34 advantage.
Browne unleased a three-pointer, Stacy Remer drained two free throws, Cunningham made a jumper and DeVane flipped in two foul shots during the run.
Glenville State went into the break with a 40-39 lead.
The Lady Pioneers scored the first 11 points of the second half to open up a 51-39 advantage before Stewart drained a jumper for Wesleyan to end the run.
Glenville State extended their lead to 15, at 72-57, with 8:27 left to play.
Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run when Cunningham made a lay-up, DeVane hit two free throws and Cunningham came back with a jumper to make it a 72-63 game with seven minutes remaining.
After a basket by Glenville State, Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run with Freiermuth canning a jumper, Stewart firing in a trey and Cunningham downing two free throws.
That cut the Lady Pioneer lead to 74-70 with 4:13 remaining.
Wesleyan couldn't get any closer though as Glenville State outscored Wesleyan by a 9-7 score during the final four minutes.
Five Lady 'Cats reached double digits and three posted double-doubles. Stewart led all scorers with 20 points.
Cunningham, Freiermuth and DeVane all had double-doubles. Cunningham scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds, Freiermuth scored 12 points and hauled down 11 rebounds and DeVane had 11 points and 11 boards.
Browne added 11 points and seven assists.
Wesleyan will have a quick turnaround as they return to the court this Saturday.
They will host Virginia-Wise at 2 p.m.
