Box Score CHARLESTON – Despite the flip of the calendar, it was the same story for most of 2014 for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats here today against the University of Charleston in a Mountain East Conference clash.
The Lady Bobcats grabbed an early lead but was not able to maintain it in a 58-54 setback.
Susan Meyer got the Lady Bobcats going with a lay-up to give Wesleyan an early 2-0 lead.
An Allyson Freiermuth jumper put Wesleyan ahead by a 16-10 score for their biggest lead of the game at six.
Wesleyan continued to hold the lead at 22-20 before ending the first half in a scoring drought.
Charleston outscored Wesleyan down the stretch by a 12-2 margin to take a 32-24 lead into the intermission.
With eight minutes gone in the second half, Wesleyan found themselves down by 15, at 43-28.
Wesleyan whittled the lead down to nine, at 52-43, with 5:20 left before staging a mini-comeback.
Adrian Cunningham (pictured) and KiKi DeVane made consecutive jumpers for Wesleyan to close the gap to 52-47.
Charleston extended their lead to 56-50 but Mari Stewart made a lay-up and Freiermuth made a jumper to bring Wesleyan to within three at 56-53.
Cunningham would add a free throw to close the gap to 56-54 but Wesleyan couldn't get any closer as Charleston closed out the scoring with a pair of three throws.
Cunningham led all scorers with 19 points.
Stewart was the other Lady Bobcats to reach double digits with 11 points.
Wesleyan fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the MEC.
They will return to action Monday when they host West Virginia State.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
