BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan kept their Mountain East Conference play-off hopes alive as they dominated play against Shepherd in a 3-0 victory today in a MEC outing at Culpepper Stadium.
The win put Wesleyan's record at 7-7-1 overall and 5-6 in the MEC.
They are now tied with Wheeling Jesuit for the fourth and final play-off spot as both teams have 15 points, but Wheeling Jesuit has played two less conference games as they own a 5-4 MEC record.
Paul Smith played a cross to Pavle Milicevic in front of the net that he buried for the score just 8:31 into the game to give Wesleyan a quick 1-0 advantage.
Tre Talaferro (pictured) intercepted a ball from Shepherd near midfield and made a strong run on the goal and scored at the 35:58 mark of the first half.
That gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
That score held at the intermission.
Jordan Halpern scored on a free kick after a Shepherd penalty at the 69th minute to wrap up the Bobcat scoring.
Wesleyan owned a 16-6 lead in shots and had a 10-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Luka Pauk improve his mark to 6-5-1 as he turned away two shots to earn the shutout victory.
The Bobcats owned a dominant 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
Shepherd was guilty of 15 fouls while Wesleyan was called for eight.
Wesleyan will return to action this Sunday when they host Urbana at 3 p.m.
