Lady 'Cats End Regular Season With Loss to Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID (Ohio) – A stunning loss ended the regular season for the West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team today against Notre Dame in a Mountain East Conference contest.

Wesleyan was looking to lock up a better seed in the upcoming MEC Tournament next week with a victory over the three-win Lady Falcons, but Notre Dame shocked Wesleyan in straight sets – 25-16, 25-23 and 26-24.

After dropping the first set, Wesleyan owned a 14-12 lead in the second set.

Notre Dame scored seven of the next eight points to take a 19-15 lead.

Wesleyan closed the gap to 24-23 on a Hannah Moore kill, but an attack error on the next play gave Notre Dame the 25-23 win.

Wesleyan owned an early 6-2 lead in the third set, but Notre Dame outscored the Lady Bobcats by a 14-9 margin to take a 16-15 advantage.

Notre Dame took a 24-22 lead but Wesleyan scored two straight points facing elimination to tie the contest at 24-24.

Notre Dame though scored the next two points for the 26-24 win.

Wesleyan had 38 kills with Hannah King leading the way with 10 while Sarah Crowder collected eight.

Emily Means led the team with 16 assists while Paulina Nottingham had 12.

Lexi Walsh paced the team with nine digs.

Notre Dame ended their season with a 3-13 MEC mark and a 4-23 overall record.

Wesleyan ended the regular season with a 6-10 MEC record and a 12-18 overall mark.

The Lady Bobcats still earned a berth into the MEC Tournament, but will enter as the eighth seed and will face nationally-ranked and top seed Wheeling Jesuit in the first round.

Wesleyan will face Wheeling Jesuit this Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. 

As the top seed, Wheeling Jesuit will host the entire MEC Tournament.
