Box Score MILLERSVILLE (Pa.) – For three quarters, it looked like the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat basketball team was going to win their season opener against Millersville here today in a non-conference contest.
Wesleyan held a 62-61 lead after three quarters, but struggled in the fourth quarter and wound up losing an 86-73 game. Wesleyan was outscored in the final quarter by a 25-11 score.
The Lady Bobcats played the game without the services of last year's Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year Mari Stewart who was out nursing an injury.
Wesleyan was down early 21-15 but Stacy Remer sank a free throw and Brooke Richard made a lay-up to trim the deficit to three, at 21-18, at the end of the first quarter.
Down 25-22, Alexa Szelong drained a three-pointer and came back to score on a lay-up to give Wesleyan their first lead, at 27-25, with 6:34 left in the second quarter.
Millersville outscored Wesleyan by a 17-13 score in the final six minutes of the half to grab a 42-40 lead into the intermission.
Down 48-43, Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run to take a 50-48 lead with 5:22 showing on the third-quarter clock.
Szelong uncorked a three-pointer and Adrian Cunningham (pictured) made consecutive lay-ups during the run.
Wesleyan maintained a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter by a 62-61 score.
Millersville scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to take a 73-62 advantage and never looked back.
Wesleyan couldn't get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Cunningham had a double-double for the Lady Bobcats as she scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Rachel Vandertoolen was the other Lady Bobcat to reach double digits as she poured in 14 points.
Wesleyan (0-1) will be idle until this Saturday when they open up Mountain East Conference play against Fairmont State.
The game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
