Box Score FAIRMONT – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats put four players in double-digits, but it wasn't enough to overcome the unbeaten Fairmont State Lady Falcons here today as Wesleyan dropped a 79-69 Mountain East Conference decision at the Joe Retton Arena.
Adrian Cunningham came off the bench to score 14 points with Allie Browne (pictured) contributing 13, Alexa Szelong getting 11 and Kambrie Bosley adding 10.
Tara Goldman just missed a double-double for Wesleyan as she scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Wesleyan led early 10-7 after a Bosley three-pointer at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter.
Fairmont State went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 14-10 but Goldman fired in a three-pointer and Cunningham scored on a lay-up to give the lead back to Wesleyan at 15-14 with 3:52 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Falcons closed the opening quarter on a 12-2 run taking a 26-17 advantage after one quarter of action.
Fairmont State pushed their lead to 11 before Szelong fired in a three-pointer to close out the half to make it a 43-35 score at the half.
Fairmont State scored the first basket of the second half to go up by 10, but Szelong drained back-to-back three pointers, Cunningham darted inside for a lay-up and Stacy Remer made a free throw to bring Wesleyan to within one, at 45-44, with 7:15 left in the third quarter.
With the Lady Falcons leading 49-46, Cunningham scored on a lay-up and Szelong scored from inside to give Wesleyan the lead, at 50-49, with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter.
Fairmont State went on an 11-1 run though to capture the lead at 60-51 before Bosley drained a three to wrap up the third quarter, leaving Wesleyan down by six, at 60-54.
The Lady Falcons opened the final quarter with a three-pointer to take a 63-54 lead, but Allie Browne and Cunningham both fired in three-pointers to bring the Lady 'Cats to within three, at 63-60, with 6:07 remaining.
Wesleyan couldn't get any closer as Fairmont State ended the game on a 16-9 run over the final six minutes for the victory.
Wesleyan shot just 34.2 percent from the floor hitting on 26 of their 76 shots.
The Lady Bobcats are now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MEC.
Fairmont State improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will return to action this Monday when they visit Shepherd at 5:30 p.m. in a MEC clash.
