McGrew Goes For 28 Points and 17 Rebounds In Win Over SU

SHEPHERDSTOWN – Pre-season All-American Tanner McGrew (pictured) has played well for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in their first three games of the year.

The senior forward has averaged 19.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Pretty good numbers, but one of the nation's best in double-doubles last year, McGrew had yet to reach a double-double this year.

Tonight on the road against Shepherd University, McGrew compiled his first double-double and then some as the Bobcats downed the Rams by a 78-71 score.

McGrew had a game-high 28 points 17 rebounds and seven assists in the victory. He also added two steals and a block as Wesleyan improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.

Wesleyan started the game on an 11-0 run and never looked back.

Chris Dewberry fired in a three-pointer, Garrett Grantham hit a trey, Fred Brondsted hit another three and McGrew went inside for a lay-up during the 11-point run.

A Ja'Sahn Johnson lay-up extended Wesleyan's lead to 13, at 16-3, with 5:04 gone in the first half.

Shepherd made a mini-run outscoring Wesleyan 12-4 to close the gap to five, at 20-15, with 9:41 left in the first half.

A Soren Dossing jumper at the buzzer pushed the Wesleyan lead to 10 at the break, at 42-32.

Shepherd trimmed the Bobcat lead to 46-40 with 12:50 remaining, but McGrew made consecutive lay-ups and Mo Berchie drained a three-pointer to extend their lead back to 13, at 53-40, with 11:11 showing on the clock.

The Rams wouldn't go away as they again closed the game to a three-point margin for Wesleyan at 63-60 with four minutes remaining.

The Bobcats wouldn't fold though as they ended the game outscoring Shepherd by a 15-11 margin.

Following McGrew in the Wesleyan scoring column was Berchie with 15 points while Brondsted tacked on 14 and Johnson getting seven.

Wesleyan outrebounded Shepherd by a huge 38-21 margin.

Wesleyan will return to action this Wednesday when they remain on the road to visit Salem International at 7 p.m.
