With the West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball roster looking like a M.A.S.H. unit heading into their home opener, head coach Michael Bari turned his newer players and they responded with a huge 88-86 victory in overtime against the Wilmington (Del.) Wildcats today at Rockefeller Center.
"We had four freshman on the floor at times," remarked Bari. "It was important to get this win. We were shorthanded but we played really well. We had built an 11-point lead in the second half, then relinquished it, but the freshmen stayed out there and worked hard to get the lead back. At 0-3, it was nice to see that they didn't give up."
Freshman Alexa Szelong (pictured) led the Lady Bobcats with 24 points while freshman Kambrie Bosley added 15 points.
Stacy Remer and Catherine Bandak both had double-doubles for Wesleyan.
Remer scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Bandak had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Tara Goldman and Allie Browne each reached double digits as well as both players tallying 10 points.
Wilmington entered the game with a 4-1 record, but the Lady 'Cats outlasted the Wildcats for their first win of the young season. Wesleyan is now 1-3.
"We beat them down there last year, and they are twice as good this year," remarked Bari. "So they are a good team; an athletic team that can shoot the three well."
Wesleyan, who played their first three games on the road, will hit the road again for a two-game swing in Mountain East Conference action.
The Lady Bobcats will visit UVa.-Wise this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and then visit Concord this Saturday at 2 p.m.
"We have two big conference games coming up," concluded Bari.
