Box Score ATHENS – A furious fourth-quarter comeback came up just short for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats in a 73-70 loss to Concord today in a Mountain East Conference contest.
Wesleyan was down by 23 points, at 51-28, with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter.
The Lady Bobcats scored the final four points of the quarter as Alex Szelong made two free throws and Brooke Richard made a lay-up to bring Wesleyan to within 19 heading into the final quarter at 51-32.
Alexa Mortenson unleashed a three-pointer to start the fourth-quarter to trim the margin to 16 for the Lady Bobcats.
Following a Concord basket, Mortenson and Tara Goldman both made lay-up for Wesleyan to narrow the lead to 53-39 with 7:27 left in the contest.
Concord pushed their lead back to 16, at 63-47, with 3:53 left in the contest.
Wesleyan though fired in treys on their next three possessions with Mortenson making two of them and Richard getting one to bring Concord's lead down to seven, at 63-56, with three minutes remaining.
Concord was up by nine with a minute left, but Stacy Remer made two free throws and Kambrie Bosley fired in a three-pointer to bring Wesleyan to within four, at 69-65, with 37 seconds left.
A pair of free throws put Concord up by six, but Richard went inside for a lay-up to make it a 71-67 contest with 20 seconds left.
Concord made two more free throws, but Richard drained a quick three to make it a 73-70 game with 15 seconds
A pair of missed free throws by Concord gave Wesleyan a chance to tie the game, but Bosley was just off the mark with her three-pointer as the final whistle blew.
Wesleyan was still without the services of starters Adrian Cunningham and Mari Stewart who are nursing injuries.
Goldman led the Lady Bobcats with a double-double scoring 14 points and hauling down 11 rebounds.
Richard scored 12 points while Mortenson had 11 and Szelong had 10.
Remer had 17 rebounds and four points.
Wesleyan owned a 53-44 margin in rebounding.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will return to action next Saturday when they host Mercyhurst at 2 p.m.
