Box Score WHEELING – Mari Stewart (pictured) had her second straight 30-point performance for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats against the Wheeling Jesuit Lady Cardinals here Monday night.
Stewart scored a game-high 30 points to follow up her 37-point performance last Thursday against West Liberty, but Wesleyan wound up dropping a 67-54 decision to the Lady Cardinals.
For the first seven minutes, it looked like Wesleyan might just pull off the upset.
Down early by a 7-6 score, Allie Browne fired in a three-pointer, and after a basket by Wheeling Jesuit, Stacy Remer popped in a short jumper and Browne unleased another trey to give Wesleyan a 14-9 lead with 13:09 left in the first half.
Following two lay-ups by Wheeling Jesuit that shrunk the Wesleyan lead to one, Alexa Mortenson nailed a 10-footer to give the Lady Bobcats a 16-13 advantage with 11:19 remaining in the first half.
Wheeling Jesuit though went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-16 lead before Stewart made a lay-up to bring Wesleyan to within three, at 21-18, with 7:00 showing on the clock.
The Lady Cardinals controlled the final seven minutes outscoring Wesleyan by a 15-2 margin to take a 36-20 lead into the break.
Wheeling Jesuit pushed their lead to 18, at 44-26, with 13:43 remaining.
Stewart made a pair of jumpers to bring Wesleyan to within 14 at 44-30.
Wheeling Jesuit was still ahead by 13 at 56-43, but Stewart knocked down a short jumper then uncorked a three-pointer to close the gap to eight, at 54-48, with 6:48 left in the contest.
Wesleyan went ice cold after that as they didn't score over the next five minutes as Wheeling Jesuit went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 67-48 lead with 1:41 left.
The Lady 'Cats knocked down two threes by Stewart and Mortenson to make it a 67-54 final.
While Stewart scored her game high 30 points, the rest of the Lady 'Cats contributed only 24 points, including just three points off the bench.
Browne was the only other Lady 'Cat to reach double digits with 12 points.
The Lady 'Cats were without the services of second-leading scorer Adrian Cunningham who has been out with an injury the last two games.
Wesleyan outrebounded Wheeling Jesuit by a 34-31 margin.
The loss dropped Wesleyan to 3-21 overall and 3-18 in the Mountain East Conference.
They have little time to rest as they began their trip to Delaware immediately after the game. They will face Wilmington (Del.) tomorrow at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
