Lady 'Cats Pick Up 74-65 Road Win Against Wilmington

Box Score

WILMINGTON (Del.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team ended a two-game slide with an impressive 74-65 victory over the Wilmington (Del.) Wildcats here Tuesday evening.

The win was especially impressive considering the Lady 'Cats played a game just a day earlier at Wheeling Jesuit and then made the overnight trip to Delaware for this non-conference contest.

Senior KiKi DeVane (pictured) had a huge game for the Lady 'Cats recording a double-double. DeVane scored 10 points and had a game-high 17 rebounds.

Freshman Mari Stewart had a game-high 19 points and nine boards just missing a double-double.

Allie Browne had 10 points while Alexa Mortenson and Stacy Remer each had nine points.

Allyson Freiermuth scored five points and had 10 rebounds.

Wesleyan was down early by a 7-4 score but jumpers by DeVane and Remer treated Wesleyan to an 8-7 advantage.

With Wesleyan ahead by a 15-13 score, Stewart knocked down an 11-footer and Mortenson hit from the paint to extend the lead to six, at 19-13, with 13:19 left in the first half.

Wesleyan led by a five, at 24-19, before increasing the lead to 13 with an 8-0 run.

Brittany Allen made a three-pointer, DeVane went inside for a lay-up and Allen fired in another trey to give Wesleyan a 32-19 advantage with 5:42 left in the opening half.

Wilmington closed strong outscoring Wesleyan by a 14-4 margin as the Lady 'Cats owned a three-point lead at the break at 36-33.

Wilmington scored the first four points of the second half to take a 37-36 lead, but Mortenson returned the lead to Wesleyan with a three-pointer.

The two teams would trade the lead back-and-fourth over the next eight minutes with Wesleyan ahead by two, at 52-50, with 11 minutes remaining.

Wesleyan went on another 8-0 run with DeVane putting in a short jumper, Browne unleashing a three-pointer and Remer firing one in from long distance to give Wesleyan a 60-50 lead with 8:16 left.

The closest Wilmington could get down the stretch would be five points after a three-pointer by Taylor Carter that made it a 70-65 game with 40 seconds remaining.

Wesleyan closed out the game with Stewart going a perfect four-for-four at the line.

The Lady 'Cats connected on 31 of their 76 shots for a shooting percentage of 40.8 percent.

Wesleyan owned a huge 54-39 rebounding advantage.

"We did a great job defensively on stopping their guards from penetrating to the basket," remarked head coach Michael Bari about the win. "We totally took control on the boards. We shot the ball better tonight which gave us a chance to keep our lead."

The win improved the Lady 'Cats to 4-21 overall.

Wesleyan will wrap up their regular season when they travel to Glenville State this Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m
