WEST LIBERTY – Riley Metz threw an 87-pitch masterpiece against the West Liberty Hilltoppers today in the second game of a twin bill.
The sophomore from Hurricane (W. Va.) tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to lead the 'Cats to a 5-0 victory.
He walked just one and struck out four.
Wesleyan lead-off man Nick Jones gave Metz all the offense he needed with a home run to start the game off.
Wesleyan put the game away in the third with a four-run outburst.
They capitalized on two West Liberty errors, a walk, a hit batsman and singles by Wyatt Adkins and Corey Lynn.
Wesleyan collected six hits in the contest as Jones and Lynn each had two and Michael Logsdon and Adkins each getting one apiece.
In game one, Wesleyan dropped a 7-6 decision.
Logsdon doubled home Jones who drew a lead-off walk to give Wesleyan a quick 1-0 lead in the top of first.
West Liberty responded with three runs in their half of the first but Adkins singled home Metz in the top of the second to make it a 3-2 contest.
West Liberty extended their lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Adkins scored on a passed ball for Wesleyan in the top of the fifth to close the gap back to one at 4-3.
The 'Cats took the lead with a three-run outburst in the top of seventh.
Moneypenney had a one-run single and Lynn had a two-run single to give Wesleyan its first lead.
Unfortunately for the 'Cats, West Liberty rallied for three runs using a single, two doubles, two intentional walks and a Wesleyan error.
Adkins spearheaded Wesleyan's nine-hit attack with three hits.
James Gainer started the game for Wesleyan and earned a no-decision. He went six innings and gave up just one earned run on six hits.
The split left Wesleyan with a 3-6 record overall and a 2-6 MEC mark.
They will return to action this Wednesday when they visit Shepherd on Wednesday.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
