Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON – A bottom of the sixth-inning grand slam by Brooklyn Waddell (pictured) secured a huge sweep for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team over the University of Charleston Golden Eagles here Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference affair at Culpepper Field.
Wesleyan took game one by a 1-0 score and then took the nightcap by a 6-1 score.
In the second game, Wesleyan trailed by a 1-0 score heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brittani Bible began the inning with a solo home run that tied the game at 1-1.
Megan Malenstyn was hit by a pitch, and after a pop-up fly-out, Morgan Bruce and Ashley Hurey drew walks to load the bases. Rebekah Honce singled home pinch runner Brianna Franklin-Ross to give Wesleyan a 2-1 lead.
The bases were still loaded for Waddell, who crushed a pitch over the left field fence to give Wesleyan a 6-1 lead and dash the hopes of Charleston, who entered the game with an impressive 14-2 record.
Waddell was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game.
Alyssa Shawgo picked up the win for Wesleyan tossing two innings of relief. She didn't allow a run or a hit while striking out one.
Anna Eggleston started the game for Wesleyan and had a solid outing. She went five innings and gave up just one run on six hits.
In the opener, Wesleyan used more magic in the sixth inning.
With the two teams deadlocked at 0-0, Eggleston hit a bunt single and scored all the way from first on gap shot to left field by Olivia Gore.
Eggleston just beat the throw at home plate getting her foot on the plate before being tagged.
Eggleston had two of the three Wesleyan hits in game one.
Hannah Vet provided Wesleyan with another superb pitching performance.
Vet, who has now tossed three straight shutouts, gave up just three hits and fanned three in the game one victory.
The sweep increased the Wesleyan winning streak to eight.
They are now 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the MEC.
They will return to action this Wednesday when they visit Glenville State for a MEC doubleheader.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
