Bobcat Men Claw To 5-4 Win Over Edinboro

FAIRMONT -- West Virginia Wesleyan broke a four-match losing streak with a key regional win over Edinboro University here Sunday by a 5-4 score.

The match lasted six hours, during which Aitor Reparaz, Jacobo Rendon, and Nathan Savill each contributed two wins for the Bobcats.

Reparaz and Savill closed out the win for the Bobcats after Edinboro had claimed a 4-3 lead with only two matches remaining. Reparaz came back from a 0-2 deficit in the third set to take a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Daniel Galiminy, while Savill clinched the deciding point with a straight set win at No. 6 singles.

Edinboro came into the match ranked at No. 4 in the most recent ITA regional poll, while Wesleyan was No. 5.

It was the Bobcats' first win over a ranked team this spring and it should go a long way to help the team in their quest for NCAA qualification.

"It was a good, clean college tennis match with both sides competing hard all day," said head coach Marc Walters, whose team lifted its spring record to 3-5 overall.

"Edinboro had twice as much match play coming in than we have had, and I think they showed it in many of the sets where it went 4-4 all, 5-5 all where they stepped up on us. But we dug in and got a couple of key wins when we needed them and we were able to sneak it out. We are still not where we want to be but we are improving bit by bit and starting to get some guys healthy that will be important down the stretch."

The 'Cats will travel back to Fairmont Wednesday to face Fairmont State in a pair of matches, before a weeked show down with MEC rival Charleston and regional foe Shaw on Sunday.
