Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats picked up two key wins today as they took a pair of games from the Fairmont State Lady Falcons in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Culpepper Field.
Wesleyan took game one by a 5-2 score and took the second outing by a 5-2 score as well.
In game one, Fairmont State owned a 1-0 lead but a two-run home run by Morgan Bruce in the bottom of the second inning treated Wesleyan to a 2-1 advantage.
Fairmont State tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth but Wesleyan regained the lead with a run in their half of the inning on a solo home run by Olivia Gore to go up 3-2.
Wesleyan tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rebekah Honce and Bruce each drove home a run.
Fairmont State threatened in the top of the seventh putting runners at second and third, but Wesleyan pitcher Hannah Vet worked her way out of the jam keeping the Lady Falcons off the board.
Wesleyan collected 11 hits in the contest with Honce leading the way with a perfect three-for-three at the plate.
Gore, Krista Waggoner and Bruce each had two hits in the victory.
Vet upped her record to 7-2 in the complete-game effort.
She gave up two earned runs on six hits and fanned one.
In game two, Wesleyan scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to grab an early 1-0 lead.
After Fairmont State tied the game in the top of the third, Wesleyan took the lead right back in their half of the third when Gore hit a lead-off double and scored on Honce's single to left field.
Fairmont State pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth to deadlock the game at 2-2.
A three-run home run by Brooklyn Waddell in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Wesleyan their 5-2 lead.
It was Waddell's sixth home run of the season. She continues to torch the ball as she is now hitting a red-hot .574.
Waddell and Honce each had three hits in Wesleyan's 12-hit attack while Gore collected two.
Alyssa Shawgo went the distance for Wesleyan to improve her record to 2-2.
She allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out one.
The sweep improves Wesleyan to 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the MEC.
The will have a busy three days as they host Shepherd in a doubleheader Monday at 2 p.m. and then host Salem in a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m.
