Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats unleashed an offensive flurry against the Shepherd Rams here today in game two of a Mountain East Conference twin bill at Culpepper Field.
Wesleyan scored a season-high 17 runs as they cruised to a 17-6 victory in five innings of action.
The Lady 'Cats had 15 hits in the contest including going deep five times.
Brooklyn Waddell hit two home runs, Krista Waggoner hit a grand slam, and Rebekah Honce and Rachel Ramsey each knocked one over the fence.
Waddell took the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the first and placed it over the centerfield fence.
Olivia Gore drew a walk and Megan Malenstyn and Honce were each hit by a pitch.
That loaded the bases for Waggoner who uncorked a pitch over the left-centerfield fence.
Gore would later add a two-run single, Malenstyn had a two-run single and Honce hit a two-run home run to wrap up an 11-run first inning.
The Lady 'Cats sent 15 batters to the plate as Shepherd went through four pitchers in the inning.
Ramsey hit a solo shot and Waddell blasted another homer, this time a two-run blast, for a three-run second inning that gave Wesleyan a 14-1 lead.
Nicole Friedemann and Ramsey each knocked in a run for the Lady 'Cats in the third and Waggoner wrapped up the Wesleyan scoring in the fourth with a one-run single.
Waddell and Waggoner each had three hits while Malenstyn, Honce and Ramsey each had two apiece.
Alyssa Shawgo earned the win to improve her record to 3-2.
She went 3 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out two.
Kaity Hanna pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The first outing was a much tighter contest that saw Wesleyan earn a 4-2 win.
Malenstyn had a one-run single and Honce scored a runner with a sacrifice bunt to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Shepherd scored a run in the bottom of the third, but Waggoner went deep with a solo shot to centerfield to give Wesleyan a 3-1 advantage.
Shepherd made it a 3-2 game in the top of the fourth inning.
Wesleyan added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Gore led off the frame with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Malenstyn, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Honce.
Wesleyan collected eight hits in the contest.
Hannah Vet went the distance for the win.
She gave up one earned runs on nine hits and struck out one.
The sweep gave Wesleyan a 17-5 record overall and a 9-1 ledger in the Mountain East Conference.
They will return to action this Wednesday at home when they face the Salem International Tigers in a non-conference affair.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
