Holmes Scores Five Times in 19-8 Victory Over Erskine

ERSKINE (S.C.)Taylor Holmes (pictured) scored five goals and didn't commit a turnover to lead the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat lacrosse team to a win in convincing fashion over Erskine by a 19-8 score here Saturday afternoon.

"Taylor, a senior captain, had a tremendous presence out on the field for us today," remarked Wesleyan head coach Karli Brentlinger. "She made big plays on both sides of the field."

It was the first of a four-game span for the Lady Bobcats on their spring break tour south.

Jessica Hardman scored 2:24 into the game with an unassisted goal and Holmes scored 90 seconds later to treat Wesleyan to a quick 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan led by a 6-3 score with eight minutes to go in the first half but finished with a flourish with five goals.

Goals by Hardman, Emily Noel, Holmes, Kim Lubic and Natalie Schaffner treated Wesleyan to an 11-3 lead at the break.

The two teams traded goals with Wesleyan still holding a 15-8 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Wesleyan closed the second half like they did the first half with a big flourish tallying the last four goals of the contest.

Closing out the scoring for Wesleyan was Schaffner with two goals while Noel and Holmes each had one.

Hardman and Noel added four goals apiece, Schaffner put in three goals while Lubic scored two and Katie Kennedy had one.

Lexi Swisher (2-0) turned away 11 shots in the victory.

Wesleyan owned a 37-24 advantage in shots and a 37-19 advantage in shots-on-goal

The Lady 'Cats were guilty of 12 turnovers while Erskine committed 17.

"We were excited to see different players stepping up and taking new roles today," Brentlinger stated. "Draw controls were something we wanted to focus on this game. By controlling the draw we were able to control the pace of the game."

Wesleyan had an 18-11 advantage in draw controls.

The win improved the Lady 'Cats to 2-0.

They will return to action Sunday when they visit Brevard (N.C.) at 1 p.m.
