Box Score BREVARD (N.C.) – A late rally by Brevard made the final score a lot closer than what the game actually was as the West Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse team put together another solid performance in a 22-16 victory here Sunday afternoon.
The win kept the Lady 'Cats of head coach Karli Brentlinger perfect on the season at 3-0.
Wesleyan stormed into a 4-0 lead after eight minutes of action after two goals by Natalie Schaffner (pictured) and a goal by Jessica Hardman and Taylor Holmes.
Brevard closed the score to 5-3 before Holmes tallied her second goal and Emily Noel scored to up the Wesleyan lead to 7-3 with 5:48 remaining in the first half.
Brevard scored the final two goals of the half to make it a 7-5 game at the intermission.
Noel opened the second half with a goal just 34 seconds into the period to give Wesleyan an 8-5 advantage.
Following a Brevard goal, Hardman, Lubic and Schaffner all scored a goal apiece in a 90 second span to push Wesleyan's lead to 11-6 with six minutes gone in the final half.
With Wesleyan still leading by five, at 14-9, with 20 minutes remaining, the Lady 'Cats scored four straight to take an 18-9 lead.
Lubic scored twice and Holmes and Darla Quevedo each had a goal during the run. The nine-goal lead was the largest of contest for Wesleyan.
Brevard outscored Wesleyan down the stretch by a 7-4 margin to make the final score more respectable.
Hardman paced the offense with six goals while Schaffner tallied five and Lubic went to four. Holmes tacked on three goals, Noel added two and Quevedo and Rachel Finnblade put in one.
Wesleyan had a slim 38-33 lead in shots and a 30-24 lead in shots-on-goal
Wesleyan goalie Lexi Swisher (3-0) turned away eight shots.
The Lady 'Cats owned a 23-18 advantage in draw controls.
Wesleyan was guilty of nine turnovers while Brevard committed 13 turnovers.
Wesleyan will play their third game in three days as they visit Oglethorpe (Ga.) University Monday at 6 p.m.
