Box Score 2 WISE (Va.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team put on a hitting clinic here this afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Virginia-Wise.
The Lady 'Cats pounded out 19 hits in a 9-3 game-one victory and then pounded out 17 hits in a dominating 14-0 five inning triumph in the nightcap.
"We simply crushed the ball today," remarked head coach Steve Warner.
The sweep was the eighth win in a row for Warner's Lady 'Cats as they improved to 21-5 overall and 11-1 in the MEC.
Wesleyan wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first when Megan Malenstyn (pictured) tripled home Brooklyn Waddell and then scored on a single to right field by Olivia Gore.
Brittani Bible doubled home Krista Waggoner and Carly Gregory followed with a two-run home run in the top of the second to extend the Wesleyan lead to 5-0.
Gore, Rebekah Honce and Waggoner each drove in a run in the top of the fourth to push the Wesleyan lead to 8-0.
Virginia-Wise scored one in their half of the fourth and one in the fifth to make it an 8-2 game.
Wesleyan scored again in the ninth when Waddell doubled home Morgan Bruce to treat Wesleyan to a 9-2 lead.
Virginia-Wise wrapped up the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Waddell, Gore, and Waggoner each had three hits for the Lady 'Cats while Malenstyn, Honce and Bible each had two apiece.
Hannah Vet tossed a complete game giving up two earned runs on nine hits while striking out two.
She improved her record to 10-2.
In game two, Wesleyan scored five times in the top of the first.
Gore had a one-run single, Waggoner had a two-run single and Honce drilled a two-run blast over the left field fence to account for the scoring.
Wesleyan added three more in the top of the second.
Gregory hit her second home run on the day, a solo shot over the center field fence, Waggoner had a run-producing single and Honce knocked in a run on a fielder's choice to up the Wesleyan lead to 8-0.
Malenstyn hit a one-run double and Honce had a one-run single in the fourth to push the Wesleyan lead to 10-0.
Wesleyan wrapped up the scoring with a four-run fifth inning with Malenstyn, Waggoner and Honce each knocking in a run and the Lady 'Cats scoring an unearned run.
Malenstyn and Waggoner each had three hits while Waddell, Anna Eggleston, Honce and Gregory each had two.
Eggleston was dominate in the circle for Wesleyan.
She threw a five-inning shutout allowing just two hits while striking out four.
She improved her record to 7-1.
Wesleyan will return to action Sunday as they visit Concord for a MEC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
