Lady 'Cats Split With Concord; Remain in First in MEC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ATHENS – Athens was the home of a battle for first place in the Mountain East Conference softball standings as West Virginia Wesleyan visited Concord in a doubleheader this afternoon.

The two teams split the twin bill as Concord took the first game by a 5-4 score in eight innings but Wesleyan came back to take the second outing by an 11-6 score.

The split left Wesleyan in first place with a 22-6 record overall and a 12-2 mark in the MEC.

Concord is now 25-11 overall and 13-3 in the MEC.

The game-one loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Lady 'Cats.

In game one, a two-run Concord home run in the bottom of the first staked them to a quick 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan wasted little time in erasing that lead as they scored four times in the top of the second inning.

Krista Waggoner (pictured) had a one-run double that plated Olivia Gore, Brittani Bible scored Waggoner when her grounder was misplayed and Ashley Hurey doubled home Carly Gregory and Rebekah Honce to stake Wesleyan to a 4-2 advantage.

Concord scored a pair in the bottom of the third to even the game at 4-4.

The score would remain tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the eighth when Concord scored an unearned run following a Wesleyan error to escape with a 5-4 win.

Waggoner had three of Wesleyan's eight hits while Megan Malenstyn had two.

Alyssa Shawgo suffered the hard-luck loss as she pitched 2/3 of an inning of relief and gave up one unearned run.

Hannah Vet started for Wesleyan and went 6 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.

In game two, Wesleyan jumped into a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when Honce had a one-run single and Brooklyn Waddell had a two-run single to account for the scoring.

Concord scored a run in the bottom of the second but Morgan Bruce had a two-run double in the top of the third to give Wesleyan a 5-1 advantage.

Hurey had a solo blast and Malenstyn and Waggoner each had run-producing doubles to increase the Wesleyan lead to 8-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

Concord cut into that lead with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning to make it an 8-5 game.

Wesleyan answered with a three-run home run by Waggoner to extend their lead to 11-5.

Concord wrapped up the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesleyan collected 13 hits with Waggoner leading the way with three while Waddell, Gore and Honce each had two apiece.

Anna Eggleston picked up the win going five innings and striking out two.

Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday at Fairmont State for a doubleheader.

The twin bill is slated to start at 2 p.m.
