Metz Pitches Three-Hit Shutout Against Yellow Jackets

BUCKHANNONRiley Metz (pictured) continued to impress on the mound for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats.

The sophomore right-hander from Hurricane, W. Va. pitched a complete-game shutout against West Virginia State in the second game of a doubleheader here Monday afternoon as the 'Cats won, 8-0.

Metz kept his record perfect at 4-0 as he allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Corey Lynn grounded home Nick Jones in the bottom of the first for the only run Wesleyan needed.

Wesleyan pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Michael Logsdon had a one-run double, Logan Moneypenny had a groundout RBI and Travis Renner had a one-run single to account for the scoring.

Logsdon had a two-run single and Moneypenny had a one-run single in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Wesleyan lead to 7-0.

Wesleyan tacked on one more when Moneypenny brought home Lynn with a ground out in the bottom of the sixth.

Wesleyan had 11 hits in the contest with Jones and Logsdon getting two each.

In game one, Wesleyan dropped a 12-7 decision.

It was a back-and-fourth game as West Virginia State scored three runs in the top of the third but Wesleyan responded with four run in their half of the inning.

Jones, Tre Kerns and Lynn each drove in a run to account for the scoring.

State scored three more in the top of the third to take a 6-4 lead.

Wesleyan recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single by Ryan Rado and a one-run single by Renner. That gave Wesleyan a 7-6 lead.

State retook the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-7 lead and they tacked on three more in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan collected 12 hits with Renner getting three and Lynn, Rado and Logsdon getting two apiece.

Daniel Powell was one of five Wesleyan pitchers and suffered the loss.

He tossed two innings of relief and allowed three runs on four hits.

The split left Wesleyan with a 13-10 record overall and a 12-10 ledger in the MEC.

They will stay at home Wednesday when they host Shepherd in a MEC doubleheader.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
