Wesleyan Outlasts Concord in 11 Innings With 4-2 WIn

ATHENS – It took 11 innings, but the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats were finally able to pull out a win in game two of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with the Concord Mountain Lions here today.

The Bobcats won the extra-inning affair by a 4-2 score after dropping the opening game by a 7-3 score.

The split left the 'Cats with a 14-13 record overall and a 13-13 ledger in the MEC.

In game two, Wesleyan scored first in the top of the third when Tre Kerns singles, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Michael Bolla single.

Concord scored a run in their half of the third to even the contest at 1-1.

That score would remain until the top of the 10th inning.

Riley Metz led off the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and raced home on a single up the middle by Ryan Rado. That treated Wesleyan to a 2-1 lead.

Concord though extended the game by picking up a run in their half of the 10th to make it a 2-2 game.

Wesleyan won the game with two runs in the top of the 11th as they used some two-out magic to make it happen.

With two down, Metz singled and scored on a triple to right center by Kerns that gave Wesleyan a 3-2 lead.

Rado singled home Kerns to treat Wesleyan to a 4-2 lead.

Concord loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th but Wesleyan reliever Austin Boam forced a line out by Concord's Holt Cassada to Wesleyan centerfielder Kelly Machuca to end the game.

Wesleyan outhit Concord by a 15-7 margin.

Kerns had three hits while Machuca, Metz, Rado and Bolla each had two hits.

James Gainer pitched a solid game for Wesleyan.

He started the game and picked up the win tossing 10 innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three.

Boam picked up the save for Wesleyan throwing the 11th inning.

In game one, Wesleyan trailed 5-0 after three innings of play.

They finally dented the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Logsdon scored on an effor on a ball hit by Logan Moneypenny.

Concord picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.

A Logsdon two-run home run in the top of the sixth brought Wesleyan to within three at 6-3.

Concord wrapped up the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Moneypenny led Wesleyan's nine-hit attack with three hits while Logsdon and James Fraser each had two.

Denno (1-3) suffered the loss allowing three earned runs on 13 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Wesleyan and Concord will play another doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
