Wesleyan Takes Two From Fairmont State in Softball Action

FAIRMONT – An Olivia Gore three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning helped lift the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats to a 7-4 game-two victory over the Fairmont State Lady Falcons here Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.

The Lady Bobcats trailed entering the inning by a 4-2 score.

Brooklyn Waddell hit a two-run double scoring ReBecca Oneto and Emily Bennett to deadlock the contest at 4-4 before Gore powered a pitch over the fence for a three-run home run that secured the win for the Lady 'Cats.

Megan Malenstyn and Krista Waggoner each drove in a run for the Lady 'Cats in the top of the first, but Fairmont State scored four times to take a 4-2 lead.

That score would remain until the seventh inning.

Wesleyan had 12 hits in the victory with Waddell, Gore, Waggoner and Morgan Bruce each getting two apiece.

Anna Eggleston picked up the win to improve her record to 8-2. She went six innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.

Alyssa Shawgo picked up the save, her second, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Wesleyan took the first game by a 6-2 score.

Waggoner set the tone of the game early on as she hit a three-run home run in the top of the first to treat Wesleyan to a 3-0 lead.

Following a solo home run by Fairmont State in the bottom of the third, but Wesleyan answered with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the fifth.

Ashley Hurey and Malenstyn each had a home run in the inning to give Wesleyan a 5- 1 advantage.

Hurey singled home Rebekah Honce in the top of the sixth to increase the Lady Bobcat lead to 6-1.

Fairmont State hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan had nine hits with Malenstyn and Hurey each getting two apiece.

Hannah Vet improved her record to 11-2 after throwing five innings and only allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out one.

Shawgo threw the final two innings and gave up one run on one hit.

The doubleheader sweep improves the record of head coach Steve Warner's Lady 'Cats to 24-6 overall and 14-2 in the MEC.

They will have little time to rest as they will head to Shepherd Sunday for another MEC doubleheader.

First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
