Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team ran their winning streak to five games after taking a pair of Mountain East Conference road games against Shepherd University today.
Wesleyan took the first game by a 10-1 score in six innings and captured the nightcap by a 7-3 score.
Wesleyan improved to 26-6 overall and 16-2 in the MEC. They remain in first place in the MEC as second-place Concord owns a 15-5 conference mark.
A one-run double by Olivia Gore and a one-run single by Krista Waggoner in the top of the first was all the offense Wesleyan needed in game one.
Shepherd scored their lone run off of Wesleyan starting pitcher Hannah Vet in the bottom of the second inning.
Morgan Bruce hit a sacrifice fly that scored Gore and Emily Bennett doubled home Waggoner in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 4-1.
Wesleyan erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Megan Malenstyn, Waggoner and Rebekah Honce each hit a run-producing double and Bruce blasted a three-run home run to account for the scoring.
Wesleyan pounded out 15 hits with Gore and Waggoner each getting three apiece while Malenstyn and Bennett each collecting two apiece.
Vet improved her record to 12-3 as she twirled a complete game. She allowed just one earned run on eight hits while fanning six.
In game two, Gore scored when Bruce's shot to centerfield was misplayed in the top of the second to give Wesleyan an early 1-0 lead.
Malenstyn singled home Honce in the top of the fourth to increase the Wesleyan advantage to 2-0.
Shepherd scored a trio of runs in their half of the fourth on a three-run home run by Taylor Schaefer to take a 3-2 lead.
Waggoner and Honce each had a RBI in the top of the fifth to return the lead to Wesleyan at 4-3.
Brooklyn Waddell doubled home Ashley Hurey and later stole home to up the Wesleyan advantage to 6-3.
Wesleyan wrapped up the scoring in the top of the seventh when Waggoner scored on a ground out by Bruce.
The Lady 'Cats collected 11 hits in the second game.
Waggoner led the way with three while Gore and Honce each had two apiece.
Alyssa Shawgo picked up the win going 4 1/3 innings.
Anna Eggleston tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless softball to record the save.
With the sweep, Wesleyan concluded an eight-game road swing.
They will return home Tuesday for the first time since April 1 when they host Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
