Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON – Notre Dame College didn't make it easy on the West Virginia Wesleyan softball team, but in the end, the Lady Bobcats earned a sweep over the Lady Falcons and in the process won the Mountain East Conference regular season title today at Culpepper Field.
Wesleyan won game one by a 6-3 score and wrapped up the regular season title with a 4-3 walk-off victory in the second game.
In the second game, Wesleyan trailed 1-0 before Brooklyn Waddell (pictured) and Krista Waggoner each hit solo home runs to give Wesleyan a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Notre Dame hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Wesleyan's Megan Malenstyn hit a solo home run to deadlock the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
Wesleyan won the game with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Ashley Hurey doubled off the right field fence and went to third on a Waddell single.
After Anna Eggleston lined out to the shortstop, Olivia Gore took a pitch to centerfield past a diving second baseman for the game-winning hit that scored Hurey.
The hit secured the win and the MEC regular season title.
Wesleyan had eight hits including three home runs and a double.
Waddell and Gore each had two hits in the victory.
Eggleston improved her pitching record to 11-1 as she went the distance.
She allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.
In game one, Wesleyan used the long ball again and a solid pitching performance from Hannah Vet to pick up the win.
Wesleyan hit four home runs in the first game.
Down 1-0, Waggoner hit a two-run home and Malenstyn hit a solo home run to give Wesleyan a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
Notre Dame scored a run in the top of the third to make it a 3-2 game, but Hurey hit a solo blast to give Wesleyan a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
Carly Gregory hit a two-run home run as a pinch hitter for Wesleyan in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Lady Bobcat lead to 6-2.
Notre Dame tallied a run in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
Wesleyan had 12 hits in the contest with Gore getting three and Waddell and Waggoner each collecting two.
Vet improved her pitching record to 16-2 tossing all seven innings.
She gave up three earned runs on five this while striking out four.
Wesleyan ran their winning streak to 11 as they improved their record to 32-6 overall and 22-2 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will enter the MEC Tournament this Friday as the top seed. They will play at noon on Friday against an opponent yet to be named. At this moment, the eighth-seed is Shepherd.
The MEC Tournament will be held at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
