Box Score SALEM, Va. – The first step is complete for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team on their quest to win the Mountain East Conference post-season tournament.
The Lady Bobcats, the top seed in the tournament, opened play in the three-day tournament and came away with a 4-0 win over eighth-seed Shepherd.
The win improves Wesleyan to 33-6 on the season.
Just like they did during the regular season, Wesleyan used the long ball to their advantage hitting three home runs.
Brooklyn Waddell opened the game with a bang for the Lady Bobcats in the bottom of the first with a solo home.
Morgan Bruce added to the power display with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Rebekah Honce ended the home run spree with a two-run blast over the centerfield fence in the third inning.
Wesleyan had 10 hits in the contest with Waddell getting three and Krista Waggoner and Honce two apiece.
Wesleyan pitcher Anna Eggleston (pictured) was almost unhittable as she went all seven innings and allowed just three hits. She didn't walk a batter and struck out one.
At the plate, Eggleston also collected one hit.
Wesleyan will now play the winner of the West Virginia State-Wheeling Jesuit game tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
State has a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh before the game was halted because of the weather.
Rain has forced a complete overhaul of the MEC Tournament schedule.
