Box Score CALIFORNIA (Pa.) – A seventh-inning rally came up just short for the West Virginia Wesleyan softball team against the California (Pa.) Vulcans here today in the first game of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional.
Wesleyan dropped a 3-2 contest.
Down 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Krista Waggoner led off the inning hitting a solo home run over the right field fence to make it a 3-2 game.
Rebekah Honce (pictured) followed at the plate getting hit by a pitch.
Rachel Ramsey hit into a fielder's choice that erased Honce at second base, but Morgan Bruce reached on a fielding error that allowed pinch runner Nicole Friedemann to arrive safely at second.
Wesleyan had runners at first and second with one out but couldn't do any more damage.
The Lady 'Cats hit a pop-up to third for the second out and lined out to short for the final out of the game.
Wesleyan trailed early in the contest after California scored twice in the bottom of the first.
Bruce hit a solo home run over the left field fence to put Wesleyan on the board in the top third to make it a 2-1 game.
California tacked on another run that gave them a 3-1 lead. That score would remain until the top of the seventh.
Wesleyan collected five hits with Bruce getting two of them and Waggoner, Brooklyn Waddell and Ashley Hurey each getting one apiece.
Hannah Vet (20-4) tossed a complete game for Wesleyan.
She allowed three earned runs on 11 hits and struck out two.
Wesleyan and will California will pick the series back up tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
If Wesleyan beats California in the first contest, the two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. to determine the Super Regional champion.
The winner of the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
