BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats gave nationally-ranked Charleston all they wanted here Sunday in a Mountain East Conference contest at Culpepper Field.
Wesleyan hung with No. 2 Charleston but eventually dropped a 3-1 contest.
Charleston scored early, just three minutes in, when Will Roberts took a cross and scored to treat the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 lead.
Jordan Halpern tied the game for Wesleyan when he drilled home a penalty kick after a Charleston foul on a corner kick.
Halpern scored the penalty kick with 36 minutes gone.
Charleston snuck in a goal right before the half when Conor Branson put one away in front of the Bobcat net.
Charleston led by that 2-1 score at the intermission.
The game remained at that 2-1 score until Charleston scored with four minutes remaining in the game.
Felipe Antonio scored from about seven yards out for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston owned a 9-3 margin in shots-on-goal.
Wesleyan keeper Luka Pauk turned away six shots.
The Golden Eagles had a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Wesleyan, now 0-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the MEC, will return to action this Thursday on the road at Wheeling Jesuit.
Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
