ATHENS – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats ran into a buzz saw today on the road against the 19th ranked Concord University Mt. Lions here today at Callaghan Stadium in a Mountain East Conference contest.
The Bobcats lost a 59-17 decision.
Wesleyan trailed 28-0 after one quarter of action and was down 49-3 at the half.
The lone Bobcat scoring in the first half was a 42-yard field by Nick Banta with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
A highlight of the game for Wesleyan was their third quarter touchdown when quarterback Ryan Deal dropped off a short pass to De'shaun Burgess (pictured) and he broke several tackles for an 89-yard catch-and-run score.
Tavaris Anderson picked off a Concord pass at the 9:46 mark of the fourth quarter that thwarted a red zone opportunity for the Mountain Lions.
Anthony Caldera also picked off a fourth-quarter pass deep in Wesleyan territory with 3:09 left in the contest.
Caldera's interception set up a Bobcat touchdown with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
Deal hit Burgess for a four-yard touchdown strike.
Deal, one of three quarterbacks to play for Wesleyan, ended the day completing seven of his 14 passes for 120 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Burgess hauled in three passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Michael Anderson led the rushing attack with 60 yards on 14 carries.
Wesleyan ended the day with 316 yards of offense, gaining 213 through the air and 103 on the ground.
The loss left Wesleyan with a 0-4 record overall and a 0-4 in the MEC.
They will return to action next Saturday when they host West Liberty at 1 p.m.
