SHEPHERDSTOWN – Five different players got into the scoring act for the West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team as they defeated the Shepherd Rams by a 5-1 score here today in a Mountain East Conference contest.
Alex Zidani staked Wesleyan to a quick lead just 5:21 in when he beat Shepherd keeper Dmitre Snowdy. Tyler Marshall was credited with an assist on the goal.
Paul Smith played a pass from Jordan Halpern and found the back of the net to increase the Wesleyan lead to 2-0 at the 31:14 mark.
Wesleyan kept the offensive pressure on as they scored just two minutes later when Pavle Milicevic tallied an unassisted goal.
The Bobcats took that 3-0 score with them into the intermission.
Shepherd avoided the shutout when Myles Newhouse scored 13 minutes into the second half.
Halpern scored his team-leading seventh goal at the 74:07 mark with an assist going to Kevin Nyambi to up the Wesleyan lead to 4-1.
Zach Whiting wrapped up the scoring for Wesleyan when put one past Snowdy with seven minutes remaining. Phil Chafin had the assist on the goal.
Wesleyan owned a 13-7 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Bobcat keeper Luka Pauk turned away six shots as he improved his record to 1-3-1.
Wesleyan had a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
With the win, Wesleyan improved to 2-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the MEC.
The Bobcats jumped into a tie for that coveted fourth and final play-off spot in the MEC standings.
Shepherd dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will return to action this Wednesday on the road when they travel to Shippensburg for a 3:30 p.m. start.
