Volleyball Lady 'Cats Fall in Five Sets to Chowan in Opener

WINSTON-SALEM (N.C.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat volleyball team let one slip away from them in their season opener against Chowan in the CIAA/MEC Spike Out Hunger Challenge here Friday evening.

Wesleyan lost a 3-2 decision.

The Lady 'Cats went up by a 2-0 score after winning the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-21.

Chowan evened the score at 2-2 after winning the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-14.

The fifth and deciding set went to Chowan by a 15-12 score.

In the last set, Chowan raced out to a 7-0 advantage.

Wesleyan ended their run on a kill by Hannah King. The Lady 'Cats went on a run of their own scoring eight out of the next 12 points to close the deficit to an 11-9 score.

Down 14-10, a kill by King and a service error by Chowan made it a 14-12 game, but Chowan put the game away on a kill by Suraya Chase.

King and Stacie Baumann each had 11 kills for Wesleyan.

Katlyn Buckland and Paulina Nottingham each had 17 assists for the Lady Bobcats.

The Lady 'Cats of head coach Ashley Ziegle will remain in Winston-Salem for two games on Saturday.

They will face Tuskegee (Ala.) at 11 a.m. and host Winston-Salem State University at 4 p.m.
