CALIFORNIA (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team came up just short in their 2015 season debut as they went on the road to face the California (Pa.) Vulcans in a non-conference clash here Friday evening.
The Bobcats dropped a 3-2 overtime decision in a game that started 30 minutes late because of lightening in the area.
Wesleyan made the trip to California on Thursday when the game was originally scheduled, but that outing was postponed because of inclement weather.
The Vulcans scored just 50 seconds into the game on a goal by Anthony DeFrancesco.
Wesleyan's Jordan Halpern deadlocked the contest at 1-1 with a penalty kick at the 18:55 mark.
Lubos Kubik returned the lead to Cal with an unassisted goal at the 31:41 mark.
The Vulcans took that 2-1 lead into the intermission.
At the 75:47 mark, Wesleyan's OlaJuwon Akintunde scored after playing a rebound off a cross attempt to tie the game at 2-2.
The Vulcans scored the game-winner at 90:26 when Mike Cummings scored on a breakaway goal.
Cal owned a 7-3 margin in shots-on-goal while corner kicks were even at 3-3.
Wesleyan keeper Felipe Vial turned away four shots.
Wesleyan will return to action this Sunday at home when they host Millersville (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
