Wesleyan Survives Against FSU in 2-1 OT Win

Box Score

BUCKHANNON – The old adage goes 'a win is a win.'

The West Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team picked up a win against Fairmont State tonight at Culpepper Stadium, but it was hardly the type of win that most thought the Lady Bobcats would record.

Fairmont State, in their first year of eligibility as a NCAA Division II team, gave Wesleyan a huge scare as the Lady Bobcats eked out a 2-1 win in overtime in the Mountain East Conference contest.

Wesleyan dominated the game and the statistics, but trailed for a large majority of the contest.

Fairmont State stunned Wesleyan with a goal at the 13:45 mark when Erica Uselton carried the ball down into Wesleyan territory and put a shot on goal that trickled over Wesleyan keeper Hillary Dewitt.

Fairmont State took that 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot by an 18-2 margin.

Rachel Ritchey (pictured), last year's Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Year, didn't start the second half, but when she entered the game at the 60-minute mark, head coach Patrick Holguin put her on the front line against Fairmont State.

She responded by scoring Wesleyan's first goal at the 68:33 mark when she played a cross from Kelsie Hibbs and knocked in a shot to the right of Fairmont State keeper Shawna Grahman.

Wesleyan couldn't muster another goal in regulation time despite outshooting Fairmont State by a 10-3 margin.

Colette Biondi scored the game winner after knocking in her own rebound from six yards out at the 96:20 mark in the overtime period.

Jane Schleicher pushed the pass ahead to Biondi to set up the game-winner.

Wesleyan owned a 31-5 margin in shots and a 17-3 lead in shots-on-goal.

The owned a commanding 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.

DeWitt, the current MEC Defensive Player of the Week, improved her record to 2-0 on the season after turning away two shots.

Wesleyan, now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MEC, will return to action this Friday as they travel to Notre Dame College. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
