Stewart Scores 27 As Lady 'Cats Down Charleston, 68-55

BUCKHANNONMari Stewart scored a game-high 27 points to lead the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats to a 68-55 victory over the University of Charleston Golden Eagles here today in a Mountain East Conference clash at Rockefeller Center.

Tara Goldman (pictured) recorded a double-double in the win as she scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The win ended a seven-game slide for head coach Michael Bari and his team.

They are now 2-10 overall and 1-8 in the MEC.

Wesleyan trailed early 6-2, but Stewart made a jumper and then fired in a three-pointer to give the Lady Bobcats their first lead at 7-6.

The two teams went into the second quarter tied at 11-11.

Down 13-11, Wesleyan scored the next seven points as Goldman made a lay-up, Alexa Szelong unleased a trey and Stewart made a jumper as the Lady 'Cats took an 18-13 lead.

Charleston went on their own 7-0 run to take a 20-18 advantage.

With the Golden Eagles up 25-19 with 5:12 left, the Lady Bobcats ended the half on a 13-0 run.

Stewart knocked down a three-pointer, Allie Browne hit a trey, Adrian Cunningham went inside for a pair of lay-ups, Mykenzie Martin made a free throw and Browne darted inside for a lay-up.

That treated Wesleyan to a 32-25 advantage at the break.

Goldman started the third quarter with a lay-up and Stewart made two free throws to increase the Wesleyan lead to 36-25.

A three-pointer by Charleston made it a 36-28 game, but Wesleyan increased their lead to 20 with a 12-0 run.

Goldman turned in an old-fashioned three-point play, Cunningham added a lay-up and a free throw, Browne scored two points inside, Cunningham tallied a lay-up and Stewart scored from underneath to give Wesleyan a 48-28 lead with 5:11 left in the third quarter.

Wesleyan took a 54-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.

A Stewart lay-up gave Wesleyan their biggest lead of the game at 21 points, at 64-43, with 4:45 remaining in the game.

Charleston trimmed the lead down to 11 with eight seconds left, but Goldman made a lay-up to wrap up the scoring.

Cunningham added 12 points and Browne contributed with 10.

Wesleyan will return to action this Monday when they host West Virginia State at 5:30 p.m.
