Box Score URBANA (Ohio) – In an absolute spectacle of offensive basketball, the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats went on the road and won a 103-98 shootout over the Urbana Blue Knights today in a Mountain East Conference contest
Wesleyan's Tara Goldman (pictured) had a career game as she scored 34 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the victory.
Her 34 points is the third best performance by a MEC player this season.
Wesleyan made 42 field goals in the game which ties the MEC season-high of field goals in a game.
Even more impressive was the comeback by the Lady Bobcats in the second half. They were down by 11 at the half, at 56-45.
"We've been close in a lot of game all year," remarked Wesleyan head basketball coach Michael Bari. "It was great to see us close out a game, especially defensively. Obviously getting 42 field goals and 103 points felt good for a change. The team has hung in there all year and it is good to see them happy."
Every starter reached double digits for Wesleyan.
Mari Stewart picked up another double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Allie Browne scored 20 points while Adrian Cunningham tallied 17 and Brooke Richard put in 10.
Down 4-0 early, the Lady 'Cats scored 11 unanswered points. Goldman rattled off the first eight points and Browne made a three-pointer during the run.
Urbana countered with a 20-10 run, but Browne fired in a trey to end the first quarter to make it a 24-24 game after 10 minutes of action.
A Browne three-pointer pulled Wesleyan to within two, at 31-29, with 2:32 ticked off the second-quarter clock, but Urbana went on a 9-0 run for a 40-29 advantage with 5:59 left in the first half.
The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half as Urbana still led by 11 at the break, at 56-45.
A Stefanie Davis three-pointer at the 4:38 mark of the third quarter gave Urbana their biggest lead, at 13, at 71-58.
Wesleyan closed the gap to 10, at 75-65, with a minute remaining in the third quarter.
They went on a mini 5-0 run to close the quarter as Stacy Remer made a jumper and Goldman turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer.
Wesleyan went into the final 10 minutes down by five, at 75-70.
During the first four minutes of action in the final quarter, Urbana pushed their lead back to eight, at 87-79.
Browne unleashed a three-pointer, and after an Urbana basket, Browne knocked down another three and Richard hit from three-point land to make it an 89-88 contest with 3:54 left.
With 2:42 remaining, Urbana went back ahead by five, at 95-90, but the Lady Bobcats would go on a 9-0 run.
Richard uncorked another three pointer and Remer hit a jumper to tie the game at 95-95. Stewart then made two free throws and Goldman put in a lay-up to give the Lady Bobcats a 99-95 lead with 22 seconds remaining.
Danie Hafer put in a jumper and a free throw after being fouled to make it a 99-98 game for Urbana, but Stewart nailed two free throws after being fouled to put Wesleyan up 101-98 with eight seconds left.
With it still being a one possession game, Davis missed a three-pointer for Urbana as the ball rolled out of bounds last touching an Urbana player.
Goldman wrapped up the scoring with two seconds remaining with two foul shots.
Wesleyan improved their overall record to 4-14 and their MEC mark to 2-12.
They will return to action this Thursday at home against Concord.
That clash will start at 5:30 p.m.
