WISE, Va. – In a battle of two undefeated Mountain East Conference teams, the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers downed the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats by a 59-52 score tonight at the Prior Center.

Down 5-2 early, Stacy Remer made a lay-up and Mari Stewart hit a jumper to give Wesleyan a 6-5 lead.

Still up 10-9, Stewart made consecutive jumpers to treat Wesleyan to a 14-9 lead with 1:25 left in the opening quarter.

Up 14-11, Remer put in two straight baskets to give Wesleyan an 18-11 lead with 22 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The quarter ended with Wesleyan holding an 18-14 lead.

In a low-scoring second quarter, UVa.-Wise outscored Wesleyan by an 11-6 margin.

Wesleyan went five minutes without scoring in the second quarter and managed just three field goals.

They trailed at the break by one, at 25-24.

UVa.-Wise scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 32-24 advantage.

Down 45-34, Stewart knocked down a pair of jumpers to bring Wesleyan to within seven, at 45-38, with 1:13 left in the third quarter.

Wesleyan went into the final period down by 10, at 48-38.

UVa.-Wise started the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to open up their biggest lead of the game, 15 points, at 55-40.

Down 57-42, Wesleyan scored the next eight points.

Nicole Gilyard nailed a 10-footer, Rachel Vandertoolen and Tara Goldman each went inside for lay-ups and Vandertoolen came back with a jumper to make it a 57-50 contest with 1:52 remaining in the game.

A Vandertoolen jumper was the only basket Wesleyan would make in the final 1:52.

Wesleyan shot the ball better for the floor than UVa.-Wise as the Lady Bobcats were 25-for-62 (40.3 percent) while the Cavaliers were 22-for-58 (37.9 percent).

The difference came from beyond the three-point line as Wesleyan was 0-for-5 while UVa.-Wise was 8-for-23.

Wesleyan also outrebounded UVa.-Wise by a 41-37 margin.

Stewart came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points while Vandertoolen put in 10.

UVa.-Wise improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the MEC.

Wesleyan fell to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the MEC.

The Lady Bobcats will play again this Saturday when they host Concord University.

The game will tip-off in Rockefeller Center at 2 p.m.
